Defeat by Middlesbrough took gloss off League debut of Huddersfield Town’s on-loan Leicester City left-back Ben Chilwell

Ben Chilwell enjoyed his League debut – but admitted Huddersfield Town’s defeat took some of the gloss off the occasion.

It was only a second senior outing for the on-loan teenage left-back, his first coming for parent club Leicester City at Hull City in the Capital One Cup earlier this season.

Chilwell got the nod ahead of Kyle Dempsey, who played at left-back against Sheffield Wednesday, and Town’s Australian international Jason Davidson.

Head coach David Wagner, who made four changes to his side overall, rated Chilwell’s performance as “excellent”.

The 18-year-old himself said: “In the first half I thought I did well. I got forward and got a few crosses in.

“In the second half I didn’t do as well. Their winger got tighter to me and my crosses weren’t as good.

“Overall I thought I had a decent game. It was my League debut and while I was a bit nervous, I enjoyed it.

“But the result is the most important thing and it didn’t go our way.”

Despite the scoreline, Chilwell thought Town’s display was encouraging and added: “Middlesbrough are a top team, but I thought we battered them, especially in the first half.

“To do that and not get something is tough to take.

“But we will try to take the positives going forward.

“We will work on creating and taking chances and the results will start to come.”

MK Dons’ goalless draw at Wolves meant Town, who have taken just one point from the last 18 available, slipped into the Championship relegation zone.

But Chilwell insisted: “The players are all upbeat and if we play like that week in, week out, we’ll be fine.”
